TROUBLESHOOTING
TAP Driver / TAP-Windows Adapter Issues
OpenVPN on Windows requires a virtual network adapter called the TAP-Windows driver. If OpenVPN gives you an error about a missing or broken TAP adapter, this guide will fix it.
Note: VPNUK Software v1.2.2 installs its own TAP adapter automatically. Only use this guide if you're using standalone OpenVPN. If you use VPNUK Software, reinstalling it will fix TAP issues automatically.
Fix 1: Reinstall the TAP Driver via OpenVPN
- Open the Start menu and search for OpenVPN
- Right-click OpenVPN GUI and select Run as Administrator
- If OpenVPN is already installed, go to Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program
- Uninstall OpenVPN completely
- Download the latest OpenVPN installer from openvpn.net
- During installation, ensure TAP Virtual Ethernet Adapter is ticked
- Complete the installation and try connecting again
Fix 2: Add a TAP Adapter Manually
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager)
- Click Action → Add Legacy Hardware
- Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list
- Choose Network adapters
- Select TAP-Windows Provider V9 from the list
- Complete the wizard and restart your computer
Fix 3: Use VPNUK Software Instead
The easiest solution is to switch to the VPNUK Software v1.2.2. It includes its own TAP adapter, manages it automatically, and avoids all TAP driver conflicts.
