Note: L2TP/IPSec is an older protocol. For better security we recommend the VPNUK App or IKEv2.

Before you begin

Find your VPN username and password in the Members Area under VPNUK Account Details. Find your server address in your Welcome email or the Client CP. The L2TP pre-shared key is 69000903.

Open the Control Panel

Press Windows key + X and select Control Panel, or search for Control Panel from the Start screen.

Open Network and Sharing Centre

Click Network and Internet then Network and Sharing Centre.

Set up a new connection

Click Set up a new connection or network.

Connect to a Workplace

Select Connect to a workplace and click Next.

Use my Internet connection (VPN)

Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).

Enter your server address

In the Internet address field, enter your VPNUK server address (from the Client CP or Welcome email). Enter a name such as VPNUK L2TP in the Destination name field. Click Create.

Change adapter settings

In the Network and Sharing Centre, click Change adapter settings on the left. Right-click your new VPNUK connection and select Properties.

Set VPN type to L2TP/IPSec

Click the Security tab. Set Type of VPN to Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol with IPSec (L2TP/IPSec).

Enter the pre-shared key

Click Advanced settings. Select Use preshared key for authentication and enter: 69000903. Click OK.

Enter your VPN credentials

Click the General tab and confirm your server address. Click OK to save. Right-click the connection and select Connect / Disconnect. Click Connect next to VPNUK L2TP. Enter your VPN username and password from the Members Area.

Connected!

The VPN connection will show as Connected in the network panel. Your traffic is now encrypted through VPNUK.

Error 809 — cannot connect

This is a common Windows registry issue. You need to add a registry key to allow L2TP connections behind NAT. Download and run our L2TP Registry Fix (right-click → Run as administrator), then restart your computer and try again.
